General Strike of June 3, 2026: a great assertion of the strength to defeat the Labour Package and of hope in a Portugal with a future

General Strike of June 3, 2026: a great assertion of the strength to defeat the Labour Package and of hope in a Portugal with a future

Today’s General Strike is a powerful action to defeat the Labour Package [of labour laws] which was presented by the PSD/CDS Government and supported by Chega, IL [parties] and the bosses’ confederations. It is a clear rejection of social regression and of the heightened exploitation that they wish to impose upon the workers.

Workers’ living conditions: the labour package, wages and rights

Workers’ living conditions: the labour package, wages and rights

The life of the workers, the reality of the Country, and the ongoing attack on their rights through the Labour package: this is the theme of the parliamentary question we are putting to the Government today.  A process that takes place against a backdrop of growing hardship for the general public, who are facing rising prices that threaten to persist and worsen, increasing difficulties in accessing public services, particularly healthcare, and difficulties in accessing housing due to speculation encouraged by the Government.

A Call for the General Strike

A Call for the General Strike

The Government, employers, Chega and the Liberal Initiative thought they could increase precariousness, further deregulate working hours, further oppress the lives of working people, dismiss without just cause, and that everyone would simply accept this as normal.

15 Reasons to General Strike

General Strike - June 3, 2026

15 Reasons to General Strike

They say labour laws are outdated and need to be "more flexible", thinking of young people. They say it's not worth fighting. They raise prices; they deregulate working hours; they don't even want to hear about increasing wages and pensions; they never stop profiting from the war and from your work. They are the economic groups. For you, who live out of your work, there is no shortage of reasons to say enough is enough, to join the General Strike on June 3. It is necessary to defeat this Labour Package as a whole and each of its measures.

The European Commission deserves to be censured! For its complicity in the genocide in Palestine! For the major economic interests that its policy serves! For the arms race it promotes!

6 October 2025

As we pointed out when the motion of censure was voted last July, there is no lack of valid reasons to censure the European Commission – a censure that reality continues to demand.

End the blockade against Cuba

4 October 2025

João Oliveira, Member of the European Parliament for the PCP, submitted a question for oral answer to the European Commission and the Council of the European Union, stressing the need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed unilaterally on Cuba by the United States of America.

On the use of the Lajes Base to supply weapons to Israel

3 October 2025

The PCP considers it intolerable that F35 aircraft sold by the US to Israel have used the Lajes Base as a stopover. The PCP also notes the argument put forward by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, casting responsibility on the Ministry of Defence, thus highlighting the Portuguese Government's lack of clear guidance on the Israeli regime and associating Portugal with the supply of weapons for its genocidal policy, of occupation and colonisation.

Members of the European Parliament sign letter denouncing the US intention to prevent Palestinian representatives from participating in the UN General Assembly Session

2 September 2025

João Oliveira, Member of the European Parliament for the PCP, has issued an open letter for other MEPs to sign, urging the European Union institutions to take effective measures to ensure access and full participation of representatives of the Palestinian people in the proceedings of the United Nations General Assembly, which will place this month in New York.

On the Recognition of the State of Palestine by the Portuguese Government

21 September 2025

The Recognition of the State of Palestine by the Portuguese Government is a measure that was long overdue and should have been taken long ago. It is a measure that has been repeatedly proposed by the PCP for many years, particularly in the Assembly of the Republic, and which was systematically rejected by successive PSD/CDS and PS governments, under the cover ofvarious subterfuges to prevent Portugal from adopting a decision that it had the sovereign right to take.

Rally of the Avante! Festival 2025

Rally at the 49th. Avante! Festival

7 September 2025

To all the visitors, to those who never miss a Festival, to the many who have come for the first time, to those who have returned, welcome. A big greeting to each and every one of you, workers in this collective construction that is the Avante! Festival. Allow me to greet the artists, the sportspeople, all those who make the Festival happen and keep it running. A special greeting to the youth and the Portuguese Communist Youth, who are the living expression of this Festival that they have made their own.

On the worsening situation in Palestine and in the Middle East

25 August 2025

The PCP strongly condemns Israel's crimes against the Palestinian people, including its stated goal of colonising the Gaza Strip, and calls on the Portuguese Government to take a clear stance of condemnation of this new escalation and to develop effective initiatives aimed at putting an immediate end to the genocide of the Palestinian people.

PCP denounces provocative and militaristic escalation by the US in Latin America

22 August 2025

The PCP denounces and repudiates the provocative and aggressive actions by the Trump Administration currently underway in Latin America, namely in the Caribbean Sea, falsely invoking the fight against drug trafficking, and warns of the serious threat posed by the growth of militarism and interventionism by US imperialism to the sovereignty and rights of the Latin American and Caribbean peoples and to peace and security in the region.

No to the labour package: confront and defeat the attack on workers

8 August 2025

The PSD/CDS government, with the support of CH and IL and made viable by the PS, is pursuing a policy at the service of big capital, heightening exploitation, dismantling public services, attacking the democratic system and jeopardising national sovereignty. The government has announced a labour package that is a declaration of war on workers. The government, those who favour its policies and big capital are there with their goals, which have to be confronted and can be defeated.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the urgency of the struggle for peace

6 August 2025

This is the 80th. anniversary of the atomic bombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, respectively. Bombings that instantly caused around 200,000 deaths and left an unspeakable trail of destruction and suffering. A heinous crime against Humanity that absolutely nothing can justify, but which the US tried to excuse with the false argument of defeating Japan, when Japan was already militarily defeated and when in fact it was a demonstration of US military power and its aim of imposing US hegemony on the world.
