At centre of Lisbon, in Campo Pequeno, took place this Saturday, March 6, a massive rally of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP). This vibrant, militant gathering of the Portuguese communists and many fellow democrats that decided to join, marks the end of PCP’s centenary celebrations, on a day when the Party reaches its 101st anniversary.
“Here we are ready to fight the battles of the present and the future”
“A society that values the right to be a child, to grow up healthy and happy”
“Organised force of the workers is capable of everything”
“Here we are to change the world”
This event, in which thousands participated, was characterize by an atmosphere of commemoration, but also of struggle. Both at international and national level, there are pressing challenges calling upon the Portuguese workers and people to raise their voices in defence of peace, against war, and for the necessary solutions to the problems of the workers, the people and the country. This struggle, fought daily across the country, is a decisive element of the struggle for a left-wing and patriotic alternative, for an advanced democracy with the April values in the future of Portugal, for socialism.
This was the core message conveyed by the speakers at the mass rally, Inês Rodrigues, from the Portuguese Communist Youth, Paulo Raimundo and Margarida Botelho, from the executive bodies of the Party’s Central Committee, and Jerónimo de Sousa, General Secretary of PCP.
In his speech, Jerónimo de Sousa highlighted how the mass rally stood not as an end itself, but as a moment to enhance the struggle for the Workers’ rights, public health and education, for the development of the national production, for the rights of the children, the elderly, the youth and women, for a Portuguese foreign policy that fosters peace and cooperation among the peoples of the world as it should be according to Portuguese Constitution, the struggle for peace, freedom, democracy and socialism.
In this a joyful event, the Portuguese communists have reaffirmed, with strong determination and confidence, their commitment with the continuation of the struggle!
