The Central Committee, having met on January 19th., analysed the present aspects of the national political situation, issues of party life and intervention, and the state of the preparation of the campaign for the Assembly of the Republic.

1. Having met on 7th. January, the Political Committee of the PCP analysed aspects following the calling of early legislative elections and debated the preparatory work of PCP's electoral intervention.

On the situation in the Middle East

The PCP follows with particular concern the aggravation of the situation in the Middle East face to the escalade of war unchained in the last days by Israel.
Firmly condemning the terrorist attacks that in the last weekend had shaken Israel, the PCP considers that such attacks only serve the aims of the forces whose authors say to fight.

The PCP expresses its disagreement over the government's decision to allow the USA to use the Lages Base for the military actions, which that country is preparing.
About Portugal's participation in a possible retaliation to the attacks against the USA

The answer to the brutal attacks and the expression of respect for the sorrow, suffering and grief endured by the families of the victims and the American people require serenity and not anger, rationality and not spirals of violence, require the combat against all forms of terrorism and all its roots and not retaliations and vengeance, which do not bring back lost lives.
Statement on the international situation

1. In reaffirming its clear-cut condemnation of yesterday's terrorist attacks in the United States and renewing its feelings of respect for the pain and mourning of the families of the victims and of the American people, the PCP considers it its duty to emphatically draw attention to the obvious looming dangers of a worsening of international tension and of the world situation.

1 - The Portuguese Communist Party expresses its clear condemnation of the terrorist attacks that occurred today in the United States, with the sacrifice of many hundreds of innocent citizens' lives and it considers that the violence spiral, in which these attacks are inserted, it only worsens the world situation.
