At its meeting of June 16 and 17, 2000, the Central Committee examined the main aspects of the social and political situation, made a preliminary analysis of the presidential elections, defined the main tasks for the forthcoming months and debated issues concerning the preparation of the PCP's 16th Congress to be held on December, 8, 9 and 10 of this year.

New Government, old policy

1. The Central Committee of the PCP stresses that the presentation and debate on the Government's Programme formed by the Socialist Party (PS) following the legislative elections, fully confirmed its intent of repeating the main guidelines of the previous government, even proposing to deepen some of its more negative aspects.

1. This is the time to start by stressing that, as the country knows and nobody may deny, in these elections the main aim of the CDU's campaign was to strengthen its voting and the number of elected MP's.

1. We hail the great victory of the Timorese people, of the National Council of the Timorese Resistance, which after 24 years of persistent and heroic struggle against the Indonesian occupant, confirmed at the ballot box its determined will to live in freedom and independence.
