Solidarity with the Turkish people

Solidarity with the Turkish people

Statement by the Portuguese Communist Party 's Press Office

The Portuguese Communist Party condemns the Turkish government's brutal repression against the popular demonstrations that have taken place, during the past few days, in several cities of Turkey.

These popular demonstrations began demanding the rejection of decisions taken by the Government of the AKP (Justice and Development Party) of Erdogan, but quickly became a vast expression of repudiation of the brutal police repression, prepotence and authoritarianism of this Government and of its policies, demanding the government's resignation.

The Turkish government has been carrying out a policy which increasingly curtails freedoms and rights, a policy which is in the interests of the big economic and financial groups and in the interests of imperialism in the Middle East, an example of which is the active support for the foreign aggression against Syria, making Turkish territory available as a base for this aggression.

The PCP expresses its solidarity with the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) and condemns the attacks by Turkish repressive forces against the TKP headquarters in Ankara and against TKP members.

The PCP demands an immediate end to the repression and expresses its solidarity with the struggle of the people, the Communists and other progressive forces of Turkey, for their rights and freedom, for profound progressive social and economic changes, for a sovereign and anti-imperialist foreign policy.
