PCP welcomes the election of Lula da Silva, a huge victory for the Brazilian people

The PCP welcomes the election of Lula da Silva in the Brazilian presidential elections, a clear and great victory for the Brazilian people, achieved through an enthusiastic and powerful popular mobilisation of the youth, workers, and broad sectors of the population.

Lula da Silva's victory represents a significant defeat for the putschist far-right, as demonstrated once again by their scandalous manoeuvre of not accepting the will clearly expressed by the Brazilian people, as well as a remarkable setback for the anti-popular, anti-democratic, and anti-patriotic plans of the most reactionary sectors in Brazil and the neocolonial intentions of US imperialism.

Lula da Silva's victory is not only a victory for the Brazilian people, but it also constitutes an encouragement and factor of confidence for the struggle that workers and peoples are waging in Latin America and throughout the world for better living conditions, rights, sovereignty, a world of justice and equality, peace and cooperation.

The PCP salutes the Brazilian democratic and progressive forces, especially the Communist Party of Brazil and the Workers' Party, and expresses its confidence that with the continuation of a broad mobilisation and popular participation, the Brazilian people will face the demanding challenges and struggles ahead in defence of democracy and the sovereignty of Brazil and for the better life to which the workers and the Brazilian people aspire and are entitled.
