Solidarity with the workers and the people of Cyprus

18th March 2013 - Confronted with the measures imposed upon the Cypriot workers and people, contained in the memorandum of understanding agreed between the Troika (IMF, ECB and EU) and the Cypriot government, the PCP has sent to the Progressive Party of Working People of Cyprus (AKEL) the following message

«To the Central Committee of AKEL

Dear Comrades,

Please accept the fraternal greetings of the Portuguese Communists. We follow, with a spirit of solidarity, the struggle that your Party is waging, together with the class trade union movement, against the brutal measures imposed by the IMF, the ECB and the European Union, in coordination with the right-wing government that has recently taken office, which counter the interests, rights and achievements of the Cypriot workers and people.

As now happens in your country, Portugal has also been, for the past two years, the target of an unacceptable foreign interference, a pact of aggression between the foreign troika (IMF, ECB, EU) and the domestic troika (Socialist Party, Social Democratic Party and CDS/People's Party) which attempts to, on the one hand, carry out a true process of economic colonization that brutally attacks national sovereignty and jeopardizes the country's present and future, and on the other hand to effect a violent social regression seeking to destroy the achievements which our people won, through decades of struggle and with the April [1974] Revolution.

We are, therefore, in a position to state to you that the only possible course of action is that which you are taking. The path of struggle, of the people's unity against the impositions by capital, by the European Union and the IMF. The path that rejects the “memorandums” which, as Portugal's reality proves, not only do not solve any of the problems which our peoples and countries face, as they make them worse.

We therefore wish to express our profound solidarity, at this demanding time for the Cypriot people, and to tell you that you are not alone in the struggle. As in Cyprus, here too, in Portugal, we are fighting to defeat these policies and those who execute them.

The struggle continues!»
