50 years of the fascist military coup in Chile - A crime that cannot be forgotten

50 years of the fascist military coup in Chile - A crime that cannot be forgotten

On September 11, 1973, exactly 50 years ago, a military coup, led by Augusto Pinochet, overthrew President Salvador Allende and his Government of Popular Unity, took power by force and imposed a brutal fascist dictatorship on the Chilean people. A heinous act that communists, and certainly other democrats, have the responsibility and duty to mark. Not letting fall into oblivion the brutal wave of violence that characterised the coup and horrified the Chilean people and the world.

Rally of the 47th. Avante Festival!

Rally of the 47th. Avante Festival!

From here I salute the thousands who built, promoted and those who ensure the functioning of this great Festival, I salute the youth and JCP who make this remarkable collective construction, and rightly so, their Festival. I salute all the visitors, those who are always there, those who have returned and those who are here for the first time. Here you are at home and know that tomorrow we will be by your side, in different expressions of life, in the difficulties, in the dream, in the joy, in the fair struggles that we will carry out.

Yes to Peace! For a world free of nuclear weapons!

Yes to Peace! For a world free of nuclear weapons!

August 6, 1945 is a date that progressive and peace-loving forces around the world signal, so that the memory of the monstrous crime, which was the launching of the first atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima ( and three days later on Nagasaki), is not forgotten and learn from that tragedy, which caused thousands of deaths and suffering that lasts until today, lessons for the fight against militarism and war and for nuclear disarmament.

Presentation of the book “TAP Dossier: Resisting privatisations”

Presentation of the book “TAP Dossier: Resisting privatisations”

The book that we present here today is, and as its name implies, PCP’s contribution not only for resisting the privatisation of TAP, but also a clear denunciation of the tragedy of privatisations in Portugal. A tragedy sustained for years and years by a brutal ideological campaign aimed at public companies, seeking to convince the workers and the Portuguese people that what was theirs, built with their effort and work, should be delivered into the hands of capital.

PCP demands an immediate end to violence against the Palestinian people

8 March 2023

The PCP strongly condemns the brutal heightening of Israeli repression against the Palestinian people and warns of the danger of a new escalation in the policy of forced expulsion of Palestinians from their homes and lands by the current Zionist Government of Israel.

Solidarity with the communists and other democratic forces in India

8 March 2023

The PCP condemns very strongly the terrorist action unleashed by the Bharatiya Janata Party in the State of Tripura against the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Left Front and other political forces and their militants and activists, following the recent elections that were held in this Indian state, where they have historically enjoyed great popular support.

PCP demands that the US remove Cuba from the illegitimate «list of countries sponsoring terrorism»

7 March 2023

The PCP repudiates the US Administration’s provocative decision to keep Cuba on the arbitrary “list of countries sponsoring terrorism”, going against Biden’s promises to reverse this unacceptable measure that was enacted by the Trump Administration days before the end of its term.

Solidarity with Bolivarian Venezuela

7 March 2023

Condemning the renewal of the Executive Order, decreed on March 8, 2015, by the US Administration, headed by Obama, which unacceptably named Venezuela as "an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States", the PCP reaffirms solidarity with Bolivarian Venezuela.

For peace! End the escalation of confrontation and war!

23 February 2023

The escalation of the war in Ukraine, a war that has been going on for nine years and which urgently needs to end, is of great concern to all those who aspire to a world of peace. The arms escalation and the resulting continuation and intensification of the war entail growing and serious consequences and dangers for the Ukrainian and Russian peoples, for the peoples of Europe and the whole world.

On the announcement of a decoration to Zelensky

16 February 2023

The announced award of the highest degree of the «Order of Freedom» by the President of the Republic to Zelenski can only be received with outrage by all those who know the value of the struggle for freedom that the Portuguese people waged over decades against the fascist regime. On the eve of the celebrations of the 50th.

«Only a great conviction about the justice of these demands is what makes all these people gather in this way»

11 February 2023

I am here to express solidarity with the struggle of the teachers, just as I have been in other actions, just as several leaders of my Party have been in all districts of our country, and because the struggle of the teachers is just, their claims, indeed, as can be seen in this formidable mobilisation that is taking place. What matters are the just claims of the teachers, the valorisation of their career, the respect they deserve. This is what is at stake today. In fact, it is at stake very strongly, as witnessed here in the streets.

CGTP-IN demonstration «National Day of Outrage, Protest and Struggle»

«A momentous day of struggle by those who work in Portugal»

9 February 2023

We are witnessing a great day of workers' struggle, a day of outrage, protest and struggle. A very significant set of actions, strikes, stoppages, with expression on the streets, as you can see here, with all this determination, in a struggle that is amply justified. A struggle for wages, a struggle against the rising cost of living. A struggle for price regulation, against precariousness. In the end, a struggle for the rights of those who produce our country's wealth. The people who are here deserve a better life, a decent life which is something they don't have.

PCP expresses solidarity with the Syrian and Turkish people

7 February 2023

Upon learning of the tragic consequences of the earthquake that hit Syria and Turkey, the Portuguese Communist Party conveyed, through the parties with which it has relations, the most heartfelt condolences and deep solidarity of the Portuguese communists to the Syrian and Turkish people. The PCP expressed hope that the response to the immediate needs of the affected populations could be assured, including through the urgent mobilisation of international aid, and that the terrible consequences of this catastrophe would be overcome as quickly as possible.

PCP starts campaign «More strength to the workers»

1 February 2023

With more than fifty initiatives, the PCP starts tomorrow, February 2, the action “More strength to the workers”, which will be carried out with the workers in companies and workplaces all over the country, until the end of May. An initiative, involving contact actions, propaganda, distribution of documents, meetings, testimonials, which aims to denounce the problems faced by the workers and which seeks to affirm the importance of work and workers, promoting the valorisation of their wages, working times, employment relationships, rights and working conditions.
