Release from the PCP Press Office

On the US provocation of the People's Republic of China

The PCP expresses deep concern about the latest developments in the situation in the Asia-Pacific region and condemns the provocation staged by the US with the trip of Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, to Taiwan

While being associated to the internal situation of the US and the upcoming elections, this provocation, in the context of a visit by the US Congress to several countries in the region and which invokes that one of the objectives is to discuss “security”, is part of imperialism's growing confrontation strategy against the People's Republic of China, instrumentalizing Taiwan and promoting separatism to challenge the “one China principle”, which the US has been following.

Imperialism’s recent actions in the region are inseparable from the dangerous aggressive and warmongering strategy promoted by the US, NATO and the EU, which includes the promotion of the escalation of the war in Ukraine, and whose developments are a serious threat to Peace and to the interests of the workers and peoples of the world.

The PCP demands an end to the provocations in the Asia-Pacific region, from which the Portuguese Government must demarcate itself, respect for sovereignty and non-interference by imperialism in the People's Republic of China. The PCP calls for the development of the struggle for peace, against militarism, the escalation of confrontation, aggression and interference by imperialism, for respect for the principles of the United Nations Charter and the Final Act of the Helsinki Conference, for the construction of a new international order of peace, sovereignty and social progress – consistent with the values enshrined in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic.
