Solidarity with the Communist Party of Slovakia

Given the ongoing anti-Communist campaign in Slovakia the Secretariat of the CC of the PCP delivered a letter to the Ambassador of Slovak Republic in Portugal, whose content we publish-

Mr. Ambassador Jaroslav Jarúnek
Slovak Republic

Lisbon, September 6, 2011

Dear Sir,

Reports on the application of measures of an anti-democratic nature in Slovakia, namely the passing by the Slovak Parliament of an amendment to the penal code of a fascist nature, in force since September 1, represent a matter of great concern and condemnation by the Portuguese communists and democrats in general.

Such anachronistic and persecutory measures constitute a flagrant violation of the freedoms and guarantees and basic democratic principles of the citizens and an unacceptable form of intimidation, representing a serious demonstration of downright anti-communism and an intolerable insult to the proclaimed principle of free conscience and freedom of thought and free political choices.

A situation that discredits the institutions and powers responsible for such reproachable initiatives and which affronts the memory of many millions of communists and other patriots who gave their lives in the struggle against fascism all over our Continent, including Slovakia.

Due to these reasons and expressing our full solidarity to the Communist Party of Slovakia and its militants, followers and sympathizers, the Portuguese communists demand respect for freedom and democracy from the authorities of the Slovak Republic, considering that it is a matter of elementary justice to repeal the adopted persecutory measures.

We inform that we shall make public the position expressed here, which joins many other voices in Europe and around the world that have expressed their indignation and denounced the anti-communist escalation in Slovakia. The PCP will continue to follow closely the evolution of this process and raise its voice of protest against all attempts and campaigns to curtail the freedom and political activity of the communists and all those who fight for democracy, social progress and socialism.
