On the referendum held in Greece

On the referendum held in Greece

1. The result of the referendum held in Greece today, with the victory of the "No", is a clear rejection by the Greek people of the unacceptable dictates and impositions of the European Union and the IMF and the reaffirmation of the will to have a change of policy that they expressed in the elections held on 25 January.

A result that, regardless of the evolution that may take place in that country, affirms the rejection of the continuation of the policy of exploitation and impoverishment that the European Union and the IMF have tried to impose, continuously and an in an increased form in the last five months, on the Greek workers and people.

A result that is all the more significant, since it was achieved under the pressure of an inadmissible and colossal operation of interference and destabilization promoted by the European Union and the IMF against the Greek people, which in Portugal had the active participation of the PSD/CDS Government and of the President of the Republic.

A shameful operation which, to protect the real plunder by transnational capital, by the directory of powers that govern the European Union, does not hesitate in confronting the sovereignty and democracy, the right of a people to decide sovereignly on their your destiny.
What reality shows, starting with our country, it is that the policies and instruments of domination of the European Union – from the Euro to the Budgetary Treaty – are contrary to the development and economic and social progress and represent unacceptable obstacles to the development of policies in favour of the legitimate interests and aspirations of the peoples, respecting their will and sovereignty.

2. The result of the referendum in Greece represents a major defeat for the European Union and the IMF, for all those who represent and act according to the intentions and interests of big economic and financial groups.

The unacceptable attitude of the PSD/CDS Government and of the President of the Republic portrays their clear choice of seeking to impose by all means a right-wing policy and conceal the responsibilities for its brutal economic and social consequences, in particular those of the Pact of Aggression – signed by PS, PSD and CDS with the European Union, the ECB and the IMF.

3. The PCP alerts to the continuation of the manoeuvres by those who, like the European Union and the IMF, disrespecting the will of the Greek people, will try to impose on Greece – as they impose on Portugal – dependency and economic and social disaster. What is needed is the respect of the will, once again expressed by the Greek people.

The PCP reaffirms its call to the Government and the President of the Republic who, abandoning their attitude of submission, should adopt an uncompromising attitude of defence of national interests.

Saluting the Greek workers and people, the PCP reaffirms its solidarity with their resistance and struggle against the dictates and impositions of the EU and IMF and in defence of their rights and aspirations.

4. The evolution in the European Union proves that it is the path of resistance and struggle – and not that of submission and subordination – which defends the rights and interests of the Portuguese people and the Country.
In Portugal, this path demands a rupture with the right-wing policy and the implementation of a patriotic and left-wing alternative – for which the PCP fights.

A patriotic and left-wing alternative that, standing up to the constraints and conditionings of the European Union and the Euro – which jeopardise the right of Portugal to a sovereign development –, clearly opts for the rights and interests of the people and of the Country, for justice and social progress, for sovereignty and national independence, for a Europe of cooperation among sovereign states with equal rights, of progress and peace.

It is in the hands of the Portuguese people, in their confidence, in their determination and will, to give expression to build a real alternative to ensure a Portugal with a future.
