Release from the PCP Press Office

On the recent evolution of the situation in Honduras

Given the recent developments of the situation in Honduras, with the return of President Manuel Zelaya to his country, the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) reiterates its firm condemnation of the coup d'état perpetrated on June 28th against the people and the constitutional order of Honduras.

PCP vehemently denounces and condemns the repression against the Honduran workers and people, and insists on the need for immediate reposition of constitutional order, including the urgent and unconditional return to function of Manuel Zelaya as the legitimate President of Honduras, as well as the absolute respect for international law, guaranteeing the inviolability of diplomatic representations.

PCP reaffirms its solidarity with the people and progressive forces of Honduras that, with remarkable persistence and determination, proceed after several months in their struggle to recover democratic and constitutional legality in their country, and salutes the initiatives of support to the resistance and actions of workers and democratic sectors of Honduras.

PCP calls attention to the hypocrisy that has characterized the posture of the so-called «international community» in its reaction to the coup d'état perpetrated by the Honduran oligarchy and reactionary forces, and considers it indispensable that the Portuguese Government assume a clear and adequate position in favor of the immediate re-establishment of constitutional legality in Honduras.

This position is all the more important given that Portugal will be the host country of the XIX Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Governments, to be held from November 30th to the 1st of December, in Estoril.
