Speech by Paulo Raimundo in Assembly of the Republic

Raise National Minimum Wage to €1050 already in January!

Raise National Minimum Wage to €1050 already in January!

When everybody swears eternal love for wage increases, the PCP once again provides the opportunity for the Assembly of the Republic to decide to increase the national minimum wage to €1050 as early as January, thereby stimulating a general increase in wages and the valorisation of the careers and professions of all workers.

Those who say ‘wages yes, but not now’ will come up with the old refrain: companies can't cope, we need to create wealth and then distribute it, productivity has to increase, and so on...

Wealth is created every day, the problem is that those who create it today are left with an increasingly smaller share, while those who pocket it concentrate it more and more.

And that explains the contrast between the difficult life of those who work and a cost of living that keeps rising, and the fabulous profits of economic groups and multinationals.

And we all know that productivity increases and it increases more than wages, which means that the difference is going somewhere and it is not going to the workers.

Always with their eyes on the benefits and tax breaks for the big companies, the “wages yes, but not now” crowd talk a lot about the difficulties faced by small businesses.

In small and medium-sized enterprises, the problems are not wages, but rather the costs of energy, telecommunications, credit and bank fees, insurance and rents.

But on this subject, nothing is said, because this would mean pinching the profits of large companies.

Small and medium-sized companies need that those who live and work here have better wages and increased purchasing power.

And then there is the demagoguery bordering on verbal insult by the Prime Minister when he says that the minimum wage should rise to €1,600.

We already knew there would be manoeuvring on the eve of the general strike, but this is pure desperation and mockery of those who work.

Wage increases are imperative, and raising the national minimum wage is a national emergency.

This is responsibility facing each and every one of us: either we support those who work and move closer to Spain, where the minimum wage is already €1184, or we remain in the hands of the minority.

Those who remain in the hands of the minority will also be rebuffed tomorrow by the general strike.
