Concerning the European Parliament’s decision to award the Sakharov prize to the so-called “democratic opposition in Venezuela”, the PCP’s Members of the European Parliament consider that:

This award is one more entry in a long list of acts of interference against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and against the Venezuelan people. It is all the more serious insofar as it seeks to glorify persons who promoted crimes and brutal acts of violence, and terrorist actions that caused dozens of victims among the Venezuelan people.

The best response to this unacceptable interference by the European Parliament majority was provided by the Venezuelan people, electing the National Constituent Assembly and voting in the recent regional election held in Venezuela – thus rejecting both the terrorist groups’ coup-seeking violence and the US administration’s economic boycott and threats.

The PCP’s Members of the European Parliament stand in solidarity with the Venezuelan people and are concerned about the well-being of the Portuguese community living in Venezuela. We reiterate that the Portuguese community’s interests are best protected by clearly rejecting any destabilising, terrorist and coup-seeking actions – including any stances that promote them, such as the one now taken by the European Parliament’s majority.
