"Syria"

Translated “Avante!” article by Albano Nunes, Member of the Secretariat of the CC

Within Europe, the refugees’ drama, has been widely mediatised, in order to deviate attention from the European capitalist integration process crisis, and retouch the image of a deeply discredited Germany caused by the brutal impositions upon Greece, justifying appeals towards “ a strong authority”, which ought to reinforce, once again, the EU supranational nature, and above all, hinder the true causes and those responsible for the wave of fugitives from war and death. In the last days, with the entry of the USA in scene ( proposing to receive ten thousand Syrian refugees), it is evident that imperialism seeks to monitor the “ the refugee crisis” lending a “humanitarian” face to its intervention in Syria, and under the combat against the “Islamic State”, by intensifying the military operations against Bashar-al-Assad’s regime. Hollande’s France, certainly regretful of the times of the imperialist partnership on the Ottoman Empire debris, which handed over a colonial mandate over Syria and the Lebanon , took the front end and announced the bombings over Syrian territory. Currently, Obama, obsessed by the throwing down of Syria’s government, threatens the Russian Federation, which carries on its alliance with Syria, an alliance of many decades, with its military assistance to Damascus.

At the time it is necessary to demand an humanitarian and political urgent solution concerning the refugees dramatic situation, one ought not to allow any distraction on the imperialism aggressive strategy. Currently, it is evident that the mysterious “Islamic State” was a North-American imperialism creation along with the Arab reaction to justify the interference, destabilization and war throughout the region, in particular, to liquidate the Syrian resistance before the USA dictate and its “Great Middle East” project policy. Upon four years of open interference and brutal aggression of the NATO powers; the successive failures and defeats of the forged mercenaries “alliances”, armed and monitored from the exterior; of thousand and thousand of deaths and numerous destructions; more than six million of home displaced and four million refugees ( the overwhelming majority in the boarder countries: Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan), Syria carries on resisting, which is unacceptable for imperialism. The re-starting of the campaign against this country, seeking the responsibility of its government for the refugee crisis and bringing up again the accusation of the use of chemical weapons and other war crimes, does not promise any good signs for the future. It is necessary to demask the attempt to change into a scapegoat the victim itself.

It is timely to remind that Syria was, for a long time, the most stable country in the Middle East; it was always in the frontline of the combat against the Zionist expansion, which since 1976 illegally occupies its Golan Mountains; that since its anti-colonial revolution performed an anti-imperialist external policy and cooperation with the socialist field; with the Baas party governments, based on alliances, together with communists and other nationalist and progressive parties; has been the refuge and background of Palestinians and other illegalized forces within their own countries. Within a framework of total independence and respect for differences, the PCP has kept relations with the Baas party in power and Comrade Alvaro Cunhal, himself, visited the country. Syria, with its problems and contradictions, has performed a global progressive role amid the Arab world and the rest of the world. Before this reality, imperialism desires to destroy it, whilst amid Turkey, with the complicity of the “Western and Christian world”, a ferocious repression escalade on the Kurds, is in progress, and the Saudi dictatorship bombs Yemen’s capital.
