Speech by Paulo Raimundo in Assembly of the Republic

MPs and political parties will have to decide: Are they on the side of the workers or on the side of the Government’s labour package?

MPs and political parties will have to decide: Are they on the side of the workers or on the side of the Government’s labour package?

Now is the moment of truth, every MP and every party will have to decide whether to vote against or in favour of even greater precariousness, even greater deregulation of working hours and people’s lives, even greater pressure on wages, the liberalisation of dismissals, or unpaid overtime through the “hour bank” scheme.

Every MP and every party will have to decide whether to vote against or in favour of a labour package unequivocally rejected by those who already face great difficulties in their lives due to low wages; those who already live from one fixed-term contract to the next, between periods of unemployment, temporary work, false self-employment, and piecework; and those who already face long, continuous and unregulated working hours.

Every MP and every party will have to decide whether they stand with the workers or with the government and those who think they own everything.

We do not accept the traps into which they are trying to push the workers.

The trap of placing the responsibility for productivity and competitiveness on the shoulders of those who work hard and put in long hours; the trap of “it has to be this way”, when there is nothing that compels or justifies having to choose between a brutal attack or a brutal assault on workers.

In fact, the solution to this false dilemma is simple: vote against it and nip the problem in the bud.

The trap of “they want everything to remain as it is”.

If there is anyone who knows from personal experience that a break with and change to the current situation is urgently needed, it is the workers themselves

That is why they are demanding higher wages and a fairer distribution of the wealth that they themselves create.

That is why they are demanding “equal pay for equal work”, putting an end to wage discrimination, which affects the youth and, in particular, women;

That is why they are demanding that a need for permanent work be matched by a proper employment contract, putting an end to the precariousness to which thousands upon thousands of workers are subjected.

That is why they are demanding valorisation, career progression and the abolition of SIADAP (The integrated performance management and evaluation system in Public Administration)

That is why they are demanding a reduction in working hours at a time of great technological progress, yet there are those who want people to work even longer hours.

Workers do not want things to remain the same; on the contrary, they want respect, dignity, rights and a fair life – the very opposite of a labour package inspired by the 19th. century, which solves no problems and only makes the situation worse.

None of this serves the country, the workers or the youth; the only possible outcome is its defeat, and to achieve that, we must vote against it.

Workers’ rights and lives are not for sale, nor are they bargaining chips for anything, let alone for backroom deals and political manoeuvring.

Those who make the labour package viable are responsible for each and every one of these attacks, and the workers will draw their own conclusions from that decision.

And anyone who thinks this process will end tomorrow should be aware that the workers’ struggle will continue, and that they will not let up until your labour package has been defeated.
