Jerónimo de Sousa in Brussels

For a Europe of the peoples

For a Europe of the peoples

Yesterday morning, Jerónimo de Sousa visited the European Parliament for a meeting with the eurodeputies and presidency of GUE/NGL (European United Left - Nordic Green Left), political group to which the eurodeputies of PCP belong. The General-secretary was accompanied by Manuela Bernardino and Ângelo Alves, of the Secretariat and Political Commission of the Party, respectively.

During the morning, the General-secretary of PCP participated in the plenary meeting of GUE/NGL, where he expresses the main difficulties faced by the Portuguese people and workers, resultant from the right-wing policies of the PSD/CDS Government and the Troika, underlining also the firm struggle of the Portuguese workers in response to these policies, and important contribution and solidarity with the construction of another Europe. Dozens of eurodeputies from different countries participated, many of whom raises diverse question about PCP’s analysis on the EU policies and the construction of an alternative policy for Europe. In a rich and fruitful debate, Jerónimo de Sousa referred to the European Union as a process of capitalist integration, with which a rupture is urgent, in order to surpass the limitations upon the development of countries, and the need to develop left-wing policies that recover sovereignty, an essential step to establish a true cooperation among peoples.

The leader of PCP underlined also the importance of GUE/NGL as a confederal group, a space of convergence with an already long heritage of intervention, highlighting the importance of cooperation, in a Framework of respect for the differences and specificities of each party and each country, and with which the European workers identify the alternative to the right and social-democracy. During the afternoon, Jerónimo de Sousa and the PCP delegation met with the GUE/NGL Presidium and delegations of several countries.

The day before, Jerónimo de Sousa participated in a dinner with Party members and other elements of the Portuguese community residing in Belgium. The initiative, hosted by PCP’s organization in that country and the Association of Portuguese Emigrants in Belgium (APEB), in whose headquarters the dinner took place, brought together more than 70 people.
