Afghanistan: Portuguese Government submits to the aggressive strategy of the USA and NATO

The PCP, while reiterating its opposition to the participation of Portuguese military forces in Afghanistan’s occupation, reaffirms its outright condemnation of the Portuguese government’s decision of strengthening the Portuguese military presence in that country, even by anticipation to the “appeals” of the North American Administration and to NATO’s recent decision.

The North American Administration’s decision of intensifying the war in Afghanistan, by strengthening the occupying military contingent in 30,000 men, represents a serious and additional threat against the peoples of that country and of the Central Asian region.

Dropping the mask of its rhetoric on “peace” and “dialogue”, the Obama Administration shows, with this decision, that it insists on the militaristic and warmongering line of North American imperialism and on the continuation of a strategy that, in the name of a proclaimed “multilateralism”, intends to drag the remaining members of NATO and of the European Union into the regional upgrading and spreading of the war on Afghanistan.

The chaotic situation in which the Afghan people are trying to survive, the intensification of military combats and crimes perpetrated by the forces of occupation against civilian population, the monumental political fraud which Hamid Karzai’s “election” represents and the spreading of the military conflict to Pakistan, indicate that the only road for peace in that region obligatorily demands the immediate withdrawal of all occupying troops and the respect for Afghanistan’s independence and sovereignty.

The PCP, reiterating its opposition to the participation of Portuguese military forces in the occupation of Afghanistan, reaffirms its frontal condemnation of the Portuguese government’s decision of increasing the Portuguese military deployment in that country, even anticipating the “appeals” of the North American Administration and to NATO’s recent decision.

Such a decision is contrary to the national interest and security, confronting the word and the spirit of the Portuguese Republic’s Constitution and confirming the orientation of the previous and new Socialist party governments, which submits Portuguese foreign and national defence policies to the interest of the USA and NATO.
